Voter Registration Deadlines by State - 2026 Elections

Find your state's voter registration deadline for the 2026 Midterm Elections. Each state has different deadlines for online, mail-in, and in-person voter registration. Some states offer same-day registration, allowing you to register and vote on Election Day.

Understanding Registration Deadlines

Voter registration deadlines vary significantly by state and registration method:

  • Online Registration - Available in most states; typically requires a driver's license or state ID
  • Mail Registration - Must be postmarked by the deadline; allow time for delivery
  • In-Person Registration - Register at your local election office or designated location
  • Same-Day Registration - Available in 21 states plus DC; register and vote on the same day

States with Same-Day Registration

The following states and territories allow same-day voter registration, meaning you can register and vote on Election Day: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and Washington D.C.

States Without Online Registration

A few states do not offer online voter registration: Maine, Mississippi, New Hampshire, and Texas. Voters in these states must register by mail or in person.

How to Register to Vote

  1. Visit vote.gov - the official US government voter registration website
  2. Select your state to find registration options
  3. Have your ID information ready (driver's license, state ID, or last 4 digits of SSN)
  4. Complete and submit your registration before the deadline
  5. Verify your registration status before Election Day

Check Your Registration Status

Already registered? Verify your voter registration status before Election Day to avoid surprises. Most states allow you to check your status online through your Secretary of State's website.

Important Reminders

  • Registration deadlines are firm - late registrations are not accepted (except in same-day registration states)
  • If you've moved, changed your name, or haven't voted recently, update your registration
  • Keep a record of your registration confirmation
  • Know your polling place location before Election Day
