Understanding Moon Phases

The Moon goes through a complete cycle of phases approximately every 29.5 days, known as a synodic month. During this time, we see different portions of the Moon's illuminated surface from Earth.

The Eight Moon Phases

  1. New Moon: The Moon is between Earth and the Sun, invisible to us
  2. Waxing Crescent: A sliver of light appears on the right side
  3. First Quarter: Half the Moon is illuminated (right half)
  4. Waxing Gibbous: More than half illuminated, growing toward full
  5. Full Moon: The entire face is illuminated
  6. Waning Gibbous: Starting to shrink from the right side
  7. Last Quarter: Half illuminated (left half)
  8. Waning Crescent: A sliver remains on the left before the next new moon

Why Track Moon Phases?

  • Gardening: Many gardeners plant by the moon cycle
  • Fishing: Fish activity is believed to increase around full and new moons
  • Photography: Plan night shoots around the full moon
  • Astronomy: New moons are best for stargazing
  • Religious observances: Many religions follow lunar calendars

Full Moon Names

Throughout history, different cultures have given names to each month's full moon. Common names include Wolf Moon (January), Snow Moon (February), Worm Moon (March), and Harvest Moon (September or October).
